What is a chatbot and how are they used?

A chatbot is a computer program or AI-powered voice assistant that can simulate conversation with a human. Chatbots can understand natural language and respond as a typical person would, providing a more human-like experience. Chatbots are very popular as customer service agents on many online locations like banks and healthcare websites.

Which digital assistant is your favorite chatbot?

Probably the most popular chatbot today is either Apple's Siri or Amazon's Alexa. Siri is used by iPhone users around the world to answer questions, provide directions, and more. Alexa is the go-to information source from the comfort of your couch. Some other popular chatbots you likely have heard of include: Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana, and Facebook M.

Chatbot use is growing everyday

Chatbots are already being used extensively by businesses to automate customer service. For example, companies like Starbucks, Sephora, and Pizza Hut use chatbots to help customers find products and services, place orders, and answer questions. These chatbots are powered by natural language processing (NLP) technologies, which allow them to understand complex requests and provide tailored responses. This has been very popular recently with the viral use of ChatGPT.

Chatbot technology is also being used to provide health advice. The Mayo Clinic has created a chatbot that can answer questions about common health topics, provide advice on lifestyle changes, and suggest treatments for common conditions.

Overall, chatbots are becoming more and more useful for businesses and organizations. They’re great for answering simple questions to users that don't require a human and for providing around the clock support. As AI technologies continue to develop, we’ll likely see even more applications for chatbots in the future.

While it is very hard to replace the value of talking to a human on the phone -- especially when you have an urgent problem -- chatbots are the way of the future as they are cheaper than human labor, can work 24/7 (including holidays), and they are constantly learning new information and responses the more they are used.
