Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, announced their AI chatbot tool named "Bard" and described it as an “experimental conversational AI service”. The chatbot will only be available to a limited group of “trusted testers” initially, but will be made “more widely available to the public in the coming weeks,” according to Pichai's post.
Since its launch last year, ChatGPT quickly became an internet sensation and was featured all over blogs, TikTok and heavily in the news. With Google's announcement of Bard, clearly they are playing catch up to get their tool into the hands of users. That said, Bard should have a huge advantage over ChatGPT, out of the gate, as it can utilize live and up-to-date data. According to Pichai: Bard “draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses”. Bard is built on a neural network architecture invented by Google back in 2017, so they are no strangers to AI-driven chatbot technology. The Google AI chat platform named LaMDA — short for “Language Model for Dialogue Applications” — is able to engage in free-flowing conversations with an unlimited number of topics. This ability could really put the Google chatbot ahead of its competitors, despite their headstart.
Along the same lines Microsoft, which has invested billions of dollars into OpenAI (ChatGPT), is said to be integrating ChatGPT into its Bing search engine. Leaked screenshots allegedly showing a ChatGPT-enhanced Bing last week, according to an article posted on The Verge. Being able to use natural language to engage with an AI responder about search results could drastically change how we use search in the future.

Pichai also noted in his post that we can expect to "see AI-powered features in Search" very soon. The features are described as being able to distill complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest chunks.
This could allow people to quickly understand the big picture and learn more from search results. For example, learning about a bloggers experience in a particular topic, and what that journey was like, rather than just the key points about the specific topic.
Google is also planning to make it easier for devlopers to use their architecture, by creating a suite of tools and APIs that will prodice more innovative applications using AI. This annoucement will clearly fuel the current chat technology race across the industry, similar to when the major players all annouced their cloud computing platforms: Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS and Google Cloud.
Hopefully, this will all be great for the consumer and result in even more AI technology and solutions to make our jobs and lives easier.
